Nelson Hancock is a photographer and Ph.D anthropologist. For the past two years he taught in the Critical and Visual Studies Program at Pratt Institute.
Prior to that, he operated the Nelson Hancock Gallery in Brooklyn, NY, exhibiting fine art and documentary projects that explored the boundaries of art and ethnography. He is currently working on a book of early student work and a monograph based on fieldwork in Kamchatka (Russian Far East). Nelson has been rated as one of New York Magazine’s top wedding photographers for the past nine years.
His goal at every wedding is to tell the story of the day, including sub-plots, digressions, comic interludes—the works.
Mostly, Nelson is attracted to the drama of families and their characters. He loves the costumes, the exuberance and the excesses—the traditions and the way that everyone breaks the rules here and there (or everywhere). He likes being behind the scenes as much as he enjoys the most staged rituals and he feels lucky to be the guy who gets to photograph it all.
